Herro~!
Recently, I went to my local pet store and stumbled upon the cutest fishes I've ever seen! And they are Pea Puffers! Their eyes move in different angles and they have puckers lips so they're super adorable!
They have been thriving in my 5.5 gallon fish tank at a temperature of 75 - 79 degrees fareignheight. I'd recommend them as beginner fishes because a lot of websites say they are hard to care for but if you're able to raise guppies, these guys are easy too. They just require live or frozen food. Mostly live. Also they are FRESHWATER. Adding marine salt will make them stressed and shorten their lifespan!
I usually just get them feeder shrimps of 10. Release them into the tank and the puffers go on a hunt! I've seen my pea puffers try to fight back a shrimp because it took what they were eating. The shrimp won and took it's prize near the plants Lol.
You can also feed them mystery snails. Unlike other puffers, these guys do NOT break the shells of the snails. They simply suck up the insides of the snail. You'll see what I mean later when you decide to raise one.
Another food source would be brine shrimp. These guys are best kept as occasional treats as they're not very nutritional.
Bloodworms frozen or live will be consumed willingly. Mines like moving ones so I had to use my head and make the DEAD bloodworms look like they were wiggling lol.
A filter is a must! Don't get a strong filter as they aren't the strongest swimmers. Or get a sponge filter. They are very messy eaters (hence I raise shrimp with them to take care of left overs).
They do like hiding places so always have a few ornaments inside the tank that are smooth and not rough.
I currently keep two pea puffers in my 5.5 gallon tank. A male and female. You'll see the male bully the female often but as the female mature, she also retaliates so they look like bickering husband and wife. As long as you don't see any damaged fins, they can be kept together.
Keeping 1 pea puffer per 2-3 gallons work perfectly fine. As long as you are able to keep your water clean.
I do a 50% water change once every 2 month and 30% water change every 2 weeks.
